I was greatly saddened to hear of Mr. Steffy’s passing. I feel there is little more I can add about what a wonder teacher and mentor he was that has not already been said by my friends, collegues, mentors, and fellow classmates at TAMU. His legacy continues on in the incredible cadre of students that passed through his lab and learned by his example. Many talk of his devotion to the field and the twinkle in his eye. I remember that too. In one poignant case where he had my fellow students and me build a ship model so we could sink it to see the wrecking process and how the cargo would spill out. Well we build our model, christened the Thunderbird. We were quite proud of ourselves thinking we did quite an excellent job, especially since some of use had carpentry and boatbuilding experience. We were actually wondering if the ship would sink at all. The day to sink it finally came. Mr. Steffy and all the students crowded around the water tank. Bets were being made as to how long it would take to sink, some of us thinking, gees, I’ve got a class in an hour or so to get to. We gently placed it in the water. Within 60 seconds it was on the bottom. There came that twinkle in the eye.
    Farwell, Mr. Steffy.
