Pro-life vs Pro-choice

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I have come to know that abortion is debated on alot.  Some people are for it, some are against it.  I realized I should find out the views of the presidential candidates on this topic to gain a better understanding of each candidate’s views and figure out who I agree with more.

Senator Obama is Pro-choice and has attacked McCain saying things like “McCain will make abortion illegal”.  McCain responded to the statements by saying that he favors overturning the Supreme Court’s guarantee of abortion rights but would let states decide their own abortion laws.  McCain is not seeking a constitutional ban to make abortion illegal.  Eventhough McCain is pro-life, he still would leave the choice of allowing abortion to the states.

War in Iraq

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

John McCain was in the military when he was younger and was actually a prisoner of war.  By knowing this I believe that McCain knows what we should do about the war in Iraq.  He has been overseas fighting in a war before and knows the results of war.  If anyone knows what we should do about homeland security and whether to stay in the war or not, I believe John McCain knows what to do.

Barack Obama on the other hand, has never served in the military nor have any military background.  He is completely against the war and really has no reasons to back up why he feels the way he does.  I am not saying I am for or against war but maybe we are safe here in the U.S. because of the men and women fighting to keep our freedom and safety.

The VP’s

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Senator John McCain picked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.  Palin seems to be an independent, level headed, take charge woman.  She has shown that she is ready to be president.  Palin has brought Republicans and Democrats together.  She is also very active in trying to find new energy resources.  I believe McCain was wise in his decision of his running mate.

Obama, on the other hand, picked Illinios Senator Joe Biden.  I think he may have made a mistake in this decision because Biden himself stated that Hillary Clinton might have been a better choice.  I believe that someone who is picked to be a president’s vice president should never say that someone may be better for the position.  If he isn’t sure of himself and confindent, why should American’s be?

Offshore Drilling

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Since gas prices are completely outrageous now days, my blog today is about offshore drilling.  It is so agravating spending as much money on gas as we have to now. There is no reason we should be paying what we do.  Something has to be done about this or pretty soon nobody will be able to drive, or atleast we won’t be able to drive the big trucks and SUV’s many of us enjoy driving.

Republican candidate, John McCain, believes that offshore drilling is an essential part of any plan to lower gas prices.  However, Democratic candidate, Barack Obama opposes drilling in U.S. coastal waters, and says allowing exploration now wouldn’t affect gasoline prices for at least five years.

I’m not sure how long it would take for offshore drilling to lower gas prices but I think that we should drill off the U.S. coast so that we do not have to depend on foreign countries for all of our oil and sooner or later we would see decreasing gas prices if we drill off the coast.  Sorry if I offend anyone but this is my opinion on this matter, feel free to disagree or agree with me.  To read more on this topic you can visit http://www.gopusa.com/news/2008/july/0729_mccain_drilling.shtml.

Elections? What do I do?

Monday, September 1st, 2008

My name is Shelby, I am a sophmore Nutrition major from a small town here in the great state of Texas. I am a fulltime student which keeps me busy most of the time so I have no extra time to keep up with what’s going on in the world outside of Texas A&M. With elections being right around the corner I am starting to worry about what to do, who to vote for, and if I will make the right decision. Since I have never voted or payed a whole lot of attention to politics, I am pretty much clueless. Growing up, I have always known the political views of my parents and who they would vote for but do I agree with them? My dad has always told me that parents are always right, but are they really? Should I just listen to my dad or should I be independent and do what I think is right? I am going to learn as much as I can about the differences between Obama and McCain so that I will be able to tell which candidate I agree with the most and vote accordingly. Hopefully other people that are as clueless as me or still have lingering questions will benefit from this as well. I am sure that I am not the only college student or young person that has never been able to vote before and is questioning who to vote for. By the time elections come around, I should know enough about each canditate’s views on important topics to decide who to vote for.
