Alright this one digs at the heart of many restaurants I’ve worked at, and probably most around the country. We’ve all seen the person, or persons, in the kitchen that can’t speak English, and what we probably observed along with that is the fact that because this person cannot speak the English language, their ability to perform is greatly depreciated. Don’t get me wrong, growing up on the border of Mexico, as white person, has developed in me an undying respect for those that come to this country to better their lives, and the ability to more or less understand some of the Spanish language enough to communicate with Spanish speakers. I think most of us can agree that without them our entire economy would disintegrate. But nonetheless, if someone is put into a position where they need to be able to read and speak English in order to fulfill the responsibilities of their job description, they need to damn well be able to. I cannot count the number of times I have had an order delivered to the table by someone else and it was wrong because the person responsible for preparing the meal could not properly read the English on the order. Then trying to communicate with that person, who doesn’t understand a word anyone says, is most of the time like trying to get a brick wall to give you a high five. It just will not happen, ever. If someone is going to be placed in a job like this, they need to be able to carry out their duties properly so everyone else can do theirs. As you know, it’s all about teamwork in the food industry. If one person doesn’t do their job correctly, there’s a high probability it will throw off the balance for everyone, including the guests, creating a giant snowball effect. However, when it comes to the willingness to work and work hard, I think most of us can also agree they take us out. My respect for those individuals subject to this is much greater than that of those who show up because they have to and do the bare minimum to get some kind of payment, granted even I sometimes fall into this category. I don’t think our nation would be able to make it without these individuals, even though it does sometimes create hurdles in the workforce. They fill the positions most of us don’t even consider when looking for employment and without them our current social status would be drastically altered.
