This is something I have given a lot of deep thought to, especially at work. I wonder to myself, all the time, how I am able to be a decent server. Yes taking orders and delivering food and whatnot is easy (so outsiders think), but when you get down to the logistics of it all, it’s a pretty intense game. By logistics, I mean to begin with the guest. The guest asks for something and I go get it; simple right? Well what happens when that one thing turns into fifty, or a hundred things? How am I supposed to get it all at once? It’s impossible. The best way to handle this is to learn how to multitask. Servers are given an overload of information to process from the time they walk into work, until the time they leave, and the only way to handle it is to prioritize everything, constantly. The only way to survive in the food serving industry is to learn how to multitask, quickly, precisely and effectively. This is the key to becoming a good server, the better one can multitask, the better server one will become.
