I’m sure we have all had the pleasure of working with the individual that has barely began serving and thinks they know everything. They have the answer for everything and the know “correct” way to serve. Their inexperience is null and means nothing when it comes to advice for the veterans. I’ve been serving going on six years, and I still learn new things every shift. About two months ago I was just doing my thing, in the zone, getting work done. I had a three top that all asked for unsweetened iced tea. Obviously they were not going to need a teaspoon to mix sugar. So, I get my drinks ready and as I’m headed to the front of the house, I’m intercepted by this kid who tosses coffee, not teaspoons, into my 3 glasses. I looked at him and he said, “Just in case,” with a big grin like he’s helping me out. I looked at him in disbelief but was in the weeds so I had to just drop the drinks. I took them to the table, and those small spoons were completely covered in the tea. I told them what had happened but that didn’t seem to matter to my guests. The rest of their time with me was pretty unenjoyable, they weren’t very nice from then on and didn’t leave me a tip. I asked the other server nicely to let me do things how I want to do them and to never touch or interfere with my work again. It was unnecessary for him to do that, and he should have had enough of his own things to worry about, and being a kid did not realize that this is how I live, by making as much money as I can so I’m not constantly broke. Some people just need to grow up, but it is life and there is not much you can do in some situations. Some people just need to mind their own, and when it comes to specific things like that, time is on their side.
