Another aspect of serving, that is very important, is that of server knowledge. A servers knowledge will definitely reflect some aspect of the their tip. In order to be effective and not look like some one who does not belong, a server must know as much as they can about their place of employment and the food it serves. Besides being able to multitask, knowledge is key to being a well, effective and precise server. This will all come with time and experience, but the sooner it is developed, the better the server will become. I have learned to appreciate this through all of the intense training I have endured, and I know it has made me develop into a much more mature, precise and effective server. If a guest has a question the server should use all the knowledge they can to derive the correct answer, but if the server doesn’t know the answer they should say so and then go ask some one. If a guest asks a question a server should never leave it unanswered. Knowing things like; items on the menu, and what comes in the items served, or why the server’s place of employment operates the way it does, all add to the server’s overall serving character. The better the server is, the more money they will make. It’s common sense.
