I have worked in a decent amount of restaurants in my serving days, and one thing I haven’t come across too often is the servers who like to go all na-tur-al. Hygiene plays a pretty important part when it comes to waiting tables. You don’t want to be serving your guests and smell bad, or be covered in untrimmed facial hair, or have wrinkled clothes… As a server, one should be clean and presentable when going to work. After all, you are working for your own pay. The better of a job you do, the more money you will come across. I worked with this guy who was foreign, and decided he would go all natural to work everyday. Well, by halfway through every shift, this guy would smell like an onion factory. It was horrible! I couldn’t stand five feet away without being grossed out! Everyone that I worked with knew about this and we all wondered why no one has told him anything. Well, as it turned out, he wasn’t the best of servers and he always received complaints against him and no wonder. This man smelled worse than a hot well digger’s ass in Arizona! I didn’t understand why my boss would not get rid of this old guy, as did everyone else. I guess he was just there for so long it would be hard to get rid of him for smelling bad. And, how do you tell someone they can’t come back to the job they’ve had for years because they smell bad? Well, I ended up graduating from high school and moved to a new area and never found out what happened to Ol’ Manny, but I definitely learned something from that: I will NEVER go to work, or even out in public, smelling that bad. I want to make good tips and do well, not pull a ‘Manny’ and distinguish myself from everyone else on bad terms. That’s what all servers should do. Show up to work as a clean, presentable, good-smelling server.
