This past week I got into a conversation with one of the bartenders where I work and he brought up something about bartenders I have never noticed before. I have observed over many years, and all the bartenders I’ve come in contact with, that when it comes to work, they have things their way and that’s that. With roughly four or five exceptions, the bartenders I have met over the years have all somewhat had a bitterness to their personality. As I have observed many times with servers, that the older ones get grumpier as they age, it has seemed to be true for bartenders as well. My co-worker semi-explained it to me, that because they work by themselves the majority of the time, each person becomes more and more picky about the way things are to be done. Each bartender develops a sense of individuality and when they work with others they are forced to do things out of routine, and they consequently become aggravated with one another. From what I have observed most bartenders work a lot. This could, just like it is with serving, be the main reason the person’s sense of individuality within the workforce becomes more and more developed. After years of bartending one is much more prone to become bitter and harsh in their character. He explained to me that it just happens and there’s not much anyone can do about it except realize what they are doing and try and change it. Once I thought about all the bartenders I’ve met, and how long they’ve been doing that, it became so much clearer as to why a lot of the bartender’s I’ve met were kind of pricks. Their work ethic and developed individuality has changed the type of person they are. But, don’t get me wrong, I have met lots of very nice bartenders, some put on a show and some don’t, but looking back and thinking about the amount of time they’ve had the occupation, it really gives me a whole new outlook on them and why they are the way they are. In the future I’m going to be more conscious about the way I approach and deal with them.
