blog10007.JPG This is a photograph of me planting my basil!!

Pests- I had two bugs flying around me today in the greenhouse! On my yellow sticky care I found 2 white flies. I had 2 new fungus gnats and nothing else new!! However, on my Sophie Geranium there was a little dried up tiny moth looking insect, he was dead on one of my leaves.

Nutrition- I was responsible for the EC & pH of…NOTHING! A-Whoop! Thank ya’ll so much for not having us do our EC and pH today so we could get more out of the test review!

Growth-

Tango Dark Red Zonal Geranium- 1.3cm taller x .4cm & thinner
Sophie Cascade Ivy Geranium- 2.3cm taller x not any wider
Miramar’ Chrysanthemum- 1cm shorter x 6.9cm thinner
Snapdragon Mix-18.8cm taller x 5.4cm wider

It was crazy to see such an increase in difference over a two week break! Now that I am back in lab and measuring weekly from spring break, I was very nervous. To be honest, my readings are a little strange this week.  My snapdragons are so tall now, they look good. I am starting to see some flowers! Not blooming, but they are present with color.  My Cascade Ivy Geranium’s are so much wider in their pots and starting to curl around my pot’s base. I am not sure if I measured incorrectly last week, or if there was wilting in my plants this week. The three out of my four mixes were either shorter, thinner, or both. I guess they need more water than normal, so I will try to possibly water twice a day if I see the need for it.

Cultural Treatment- This was the shortest lab we have ever dealt with. I really enjoyed going over the differences in the Mums. How we looked at and reviewed what were wrong with each of the different treatments. It was good to know what would have happened to ours with each different treatment had we done it.

Everything, but my Ferns and Mums are receiving fertilized water of  200ppm 20-10-20. My Ferns and Mums receive plain water. The Snapdragons, geraniums, Zinnia, Mixed pots, seedlings, etc. are all receiving the fertilized water.

I had an interesting reaction to peeking down to the base of my Ivy Geranium this lab. There were soooo many dead leaves in the bottom and in between the branches. I picked a ton of dead leaves out today. I did this in my Ivy Zonal Geranium, and removed a couple dead leaves from my ‘
Miramar’ mum as well. With all of my mums I also spaced them a little farther apart. The branches were all super tight and even though I had them commercially spaced, they were looking as though they may be suffocating. I asked and was told it was alright to space them a little bit more, so I did.

I trimmed my Ipomoea out of the center of the pot of my mixed container today. I had to make room for the little guy I pinched the flowers off of last week. He was getting suffocated so I actually also pinched off a couple of the  runners for the Calibracoa as well.

My tomatoes, cosmos, and alyssum came home with me today, out of the greenhouse. I had already thinned my peppers to one seedling per cell a week before this lab. I transplanted 2 basil cells to 4.5” pots. I got to take home the rest of the basil. Snapdragons look great!

blog90111.JPG These are my finished Easter Lilies & Azaleas!

Pests- This week in lab I had a huge visitor that I noticed on Tuesday morning squirming around on my yellow sticky card. Today, he was still there!! Squirming around on my yellow sticky card! It was a little Bee wasp. I had 3 new thrips to my card and 2 new fungus gnats. I hadn’t seen any of these for a while, so it was a surprise.

Nutrition- I was responsible for the EC & pH of Snapdragons and the Boston Jr. Ferns this week. Becky, Matt, and I all worked together to test our Snapdragon mixes.

Snapdragon:        Ec- .75          pH- 7.15

Boston Jr. Fern:  Ec- .3     pH- 8.05

Growth- Tango Dark Red Zonal Geranium- 3.7cm x 2.8cm taller & widerSophie Cascade Ivy Geranium- 3.9cm taller x 3cm wider
Miramar’ Chrysanthemum- 4.2cm taller x 10cm wider

Snapdragon Mix-30cm taller x 12.2cm wider

It is crazy to see such an increase in difference over a two week break! My snapdragons are so tall now, they look good. My Cascade Ivy Geranium’s are so much wider in their pots. My ‘
Miramar’s are just bushing with beauty. It’s neat to see the increase in growth with in just a week of not measuring or seeing them.

Cultural Treatment- So many things were done today!
First of all, our Lilies were put into the cooler over the spring break to keep them from blooming. We went and took them out of the cooler today. I had a couple of buds open on mine, but they were perfect for harvest time I thought. They are gorgeous! We took our Lilies home today, and emasculated the ones that were ready. A couple of mine had already been done over break, but some were just at the point where they were about to separate their petals and show me their pollen.

I got to take home my Azaleas and chives this week as well. My Azaleas were all in full bloom. One of them however, was in perfect shape to take to the market. The other two were well advanced to be perfect for the market. They all came home this week!

I had only 2 more tray squares of marigolds to thin again. There were only 2 extra’s total in my flat. I sprayed my marigolds with B-nine 2500ppm at the end of lab.

I disbudded my Zinnias, and my Heliotrope in my mixed container, lots of purple little flowers, just taken off! That’s alright though because now there is room for more!!!

I want to say what took the longest in lab today was thinning my seedlings. I thinned my tomatoes, cosmos, and petunias, although they were tiny and difficult to mess with just as the alyssum. The alyssum get 5 seedlings per cell. The basil and petunia only now have 3 seedlings to a cell, and the tomatoes, peppers, cosmos, all have 1 seedling per cell.

Thinning my seedlings took a while, but really, disbudding my mums took the longest. We did a center bud removal on all of our mums, but one. I had to remove the short buds along the bottom and sides and leave the center bud for that mum.

The water was changed this week in some crops as well. The mums now receive pure, clean water. All of the rest of our crops receive the water by the front door in greenhouse A. This being 200ppm 20-10-20. I’m doing really well, and so much better with an easier time watering because I’m using the pots. With the watering pots I can sneak through the branches and the leaves of the garden.

My Snapdragons are ridiculously tall and sneaky. I added two more grids this week. The week before spring break there wasn’t a grid needed, but this week I added two more because they had grown so much they were in need of support.

Pests- WOW! I think this is the best week ever! No new fungas gnats. I had one little white fly and 4 extra thrips this week. On my plant I had a dead little moth looking plant. It was super tiny, I just blew him off.

Nutrition- This week I was responsible for taking the EC & pH readings for Tango Zonal Geranium and the Roanoke Mum.

Dark Red Tango- EC: 1.1        pH: 6.8

Roanoke mum- EC: .7         pH: 6.2
My EC for my Mum is Way to low. They prefer and need a higher EC to prevent chlorosis. The pH is perfect however. Last week when I took the measurements for the
Miramar mum I had the same issue. Too low of an EC and almost perfect pH. My Tango seems to be in tip top shape however. No suggestsions there.

Growth- I didn’t report my Zinnia measurements last week, but the Zinnia’s I planted were 4.4cm x 3.1cm.

Tango Dark Red Zonal Geranium- .6cm taller X .2cm widerSophie Cascade Ivy Geranium- 1.1cm taller X 1cm wider
Miramar’ Chrysanthemum- 3.6cm taller X 2.7cm wider
Snapdragon Mix- 5cm shorter X 6cm thinner.

Cultural Treatments- This is the second week that we have been watering out Chives, Ivy geranium baskets, geraniums, snapdragons, and our Zinnias with 200 ppm 20-10-20. They seem to like it better. We moved our freshly planted sow seeds onto our bench this week and out from under the covered plastic. Their media is metro mix 200. After we moved them to our bench we thinned out each of the seedlings to 1 per cell except with the Rosemary we left two per cell. We thinned them out using scissors. We did the same with our Marigolds we planted last week. Leaving one per cell and keeping the ones that were growing the closest to the center.

Our Rudbeckia ‘Indian Summer’ plugs were planted today with Sunshine #1 media and we water them with 200ppm 20-10-20 as well. We placed 2 pots on our bench and 2 pots on the LD night interruption bench.

We planted a vegetative annual mixed container using sunshine #1 media and 10” decorative pot. We arranged them in the form of an X.

I disbudded my Ivy Geraniums for the last time this week. I had quite a few on my “main pot”, and only 2 on my other pot. They look beautiful and vigorous though. I removed 2 dead leaves from the inside of each pot.

My other geraniums I disbudded and cleaned up a couple of dead leaves as well. I think of all my plants they look like they are changing the least. There was a slight amount of disbudding performed on them this week.

My Easter Lilies have 12.5 days until they bloom according to my bud measurement.

I didn’t tie another gird to my Snapdragons this week, but I did guide them up to the one I already have. They fluctuate in measurements more than any of my plants. The wind picks on them, and so does the rain and cold weather we keep having. They do like the cold though so I hope they are alright.

One of my Azaleas is in full bloom on parts of it, I get to take it home this week. There weren’t any blind shoots to remove however.

Pests- It was a lot easier to do by bug count this week because it was the first week of my new card! There is a high decrease in the amount of bugs I have been getting, that is for certain. I had 3 thrips and 2 fungus gnats this week. That is all!

Nutrition- I was responsible for ‘Miramar’ Mum and the Avendia Geranium this week.

‘Miramar’Mum : Avg. EC- 1      Avg. pH- 6.2
Great pH, perfect, but any higher and they don’t like it. My EC needs some help. My suggestion to fix the Ec problem is to increase fertilizer.

Avendia Geranium: Avg. EC – 1.2       Avg. pH- 6.5
My pH is a little high for my geraniums. They prefer the highst to be 6.0 They prefer their EC to be at 3 to 4. I believe that since we changed up the fertilizer they are going to be alright now. They will know recieve 200ppm 20-10-20. I think this will do the trick.

Growth-

Tango Dark Red Zonal Geranium- grew 2.5 cm taller and .6cm wider.

Sophie Cascade Ivy Geranium- 1.4cm shorter and 4cm wider

Miramar’ Chrysanthemum- 4.1cm taller and 4.4cm wider

Snapdragon Mix- 12.7cm taller and 7.1cm wider

Cultural Treatments- Today we changed the fertilizer for our Snapdragons, Geraniums, Ivy geranium baskets, and chives, from 200ppm 15-16-17 to 200ppm 20-10-20. This will be from now on.  I removed 2 blind shoots from one of my Azaleas, and disbudded a couple sneaky buds from my Ivy Geranium baskets. There were a couple buds I had to remove from my geraniums, and some cleaning up I had to do on my Azaleas today. I removed a few dead leaves off of my Ivy Geranium basket as well. One of my Easter Lilies I really think is the tallest in our greenhouse. I had to turn all three of them to stop their curving growth. I also measured their buds, according to my bud measurement I have 14 days left for them to flower! J I was expecting my Snapdragons to look sickly once again this week. Especially because there was a chance they may have been frost damaged. This is the best week I have ever seen them look. We added another string grid for support to them. They now have 3 support grids.

We sowed some seeds today! I sowed some tomatos, cosmos, and basil. After I wet their media for the entire flat, I placed them carefully on top of the media, then covered them with some more. I also planted Petunia, ornamental peppers, and alyssums. They were left uncovered. We used Metro Mix 200 media to plant them. Then we covered them with plastic to help them to grow quickly.

Ryan and I were partners in planting our Marigold flats today. We each grabbed a flat. I planted the ‘Durango Bolero’Marigolds, and he planted the ‘Durango Tangerine.’ We planted them in the Metro Mix 200 Media and placed 2 seeds per cell, then covered them lightly with more media. They are also going to be covered with plastic and located in greenhouse B, with the other sowed seeds.

I planted ‘Profusion White’ Zinnias today. I used Sunshine #1 media and placed each plug in its own 5” pot. I have 4 pots of white Zinnia’s now! They are to be watered with 200ppm 20-10-20 as well.

My Lilies are still getting 200 ppm 15-0-15. My Mums are still receiving 400ppm 20-10-20. My ferns and THIRSTY Azaleas are still receiving plain H20.

Synopsis:

Becuase every week I repeat, EVERYTHING I say in my records and my pets, media, etc. questions, I am going to write a complete different synopsis then normal. Today was the shortest lab I have EVER had. We didn’t plant anything, our benches are ready and prepared. The only thing I really feel that wasn’t routine was the tying of our Snapdragons and I was finally able to perform a blind shoot removal on my Azaleas. That was fun. My favorite part of lab today was FINALLY seeing which water we are supposed to use, which plant it goes on, and which door they are by. It is sooo confusing to figure it out unwritten! Thank ya’ll for doing that for us. I think that my plants want to thank you for it too! I really enjoyed seeing how my Lilies grew outrageously this weekend! it was neat, that is what my picture is of today! All of the work that we did in lab, all of the things we figured out, I have listed below.

Pests- This Week I got a new yellow sticky card to count my pests with after I counted my bugs today! I had a definite decrease in fungus gnats today, only 2 new fungus gnats! I did however have 3, new little Thrips on my card.

Nutrition- I was responsible to take the EC & pH readings for the Sophie Ivey Geranium, and the Easter Lilies.Sophie Ivy Geranium: Avg. EC: 1.8      pH: 6.7
Easter Lilies:
  Avg. EC: .6
pH: 6.9

My Easter Lilies are pretty much in perfect, good to go shape. However, my mums are having a little bit of trouble. Mums prefer EC readings of 5.4-6.5 and pH of 5.7-6.2. My pH is ok, just a little bit higher than it needs to be, however my EC reading is way to low. I discovered that I was giving my mums the incorrect water today. I know understand what needs to be done. They were getting the incorrect amount of fertilizer in their water.

Growth-
Tango Dark Red Zonal Geranium: .5cm wider X .5cm taller

Sophie Cascade Ivy Geranium:
12cm wider X 3.4cm taller
’Miramar’ Chrysanthemum:
 4.8cm wider X 2.6cm taller
Snapdragon mix:
9.9cm thinner X 6.3cm taller

Cultural Treatments-

Today we sprayed 2500ppm B-nine to our Mums. Sprayed it on our mums leaves until we saw one of them start to drip.On our Ivy Geranium baskets, and our Geraniums we sprayed some Florel 350ppm on each of them, again, spraying until a leaf dripped then moving to the next one.We also removed flower buds and dead leaves from each of these potted plants. I had a lot less dead leaves this week than any other week before. Our Snapdragons received another grid of a tied string. This one looked different from the last one we tied. It was higher up to give another level of support for our “sickly, tangly” looking snapdragons. It was a square with a triangle in the center of it. They are not doing so hot in growing together and straight. They are different sizes weekly, taking turn shrinking in width & height.I was finally able to perform a blind shoot removal on my Azaleas this week. 2 of my plants, especially the one in the back had a ton of blind shoots to remove. My scarlet had no blind shoots to remove, but my Prize and Pink Angora had many.

I also was able to take a measurement of my Lily buds! They have gotten CRAZY tall this week, at least 2 of them have. The other one is still a little short compared to its 2 neighbors, I wasn’t able to measure its visible buds. However 1 of my Lilies came in at 4 meaning 20 days left to flower, and then my 2nd one came in at line 3, meaning 25 more days left to flower.

My Easter Lilies receive 200ppm 15-0-15 water.
My Mums 400ppm
20-10-20  water.
My Ferns & Azaleas receive just plain water.
My Geraniums, chives, and Snapdragons receive 200ppm 15-16-17 water.

This is a picture of the onion chives I planted this week!

Synopsis: Lab this week began with going upstairs to learn how to better prepare & use the tools for our crop portfolio assignment. We learned the pages to check in WebCT to be able to plug in our numbers for our measurements and insects that we count each week. It was also explained a little clearer what we are supposed to be doing for that assignment.
When we went into the greenhouse we planted two pots of Onion Chives with 5 cuttings each. My measurements I took for my potted onion chives were 29cm wide x 12cm tall. We planted our chives and then had tons of work to do on our benches. We also pinched 7 nodes on our potted Mums. We removed their apical dominance so they would branch. We removed their dead leaves with scissors. Sad to say that I had many dead leaves.

We removed flower buds on our geranium baskets this week. I had quite a few of them to remove. I learned how to do it this week! When I was finished removing all of the dead leaves from my bench’s plants I added my string grid to my Snapdragons so they would have support.
Something different this week! I found a really pretty, but creepy looking pure white moth living on one of my geraniums. I quickly dispersed him out the door of the greenhouse! Also, at the end of our lab we spaced our pots differently than keeping them pot to pot like we have started with.

Pests- Although he was not on my yellow sticky card I am counting my moth this week! However, my yellow sticky card had 15 new bugs to it. 14 more fungus gnats and 1, Green Lacewing who has already dried up and turned brown. J

Nutrition: My EC and pH readings for this work were on my Tango Zonal Geraniums and my Roanoke Mums. My average pH for my Roanoke Mums was 5.2. Mums prefer a pH of 5.7 to 6.2 so we need to raise the pH in the media somehow. My EC all measured at beyond 5. This is a good thing because Mums prefer an EC of 5.4-6.5.

For my Tango Zonal Geraniums my pH averaged at 6.1 and my average EC readings were measured at 1.6. This was the lowest EC rating that I have had out of all my plants we have done these tests on.

Growth- We were told to measure our crop portfolio assignments each week only, and our newly potted plant. I reported my Onion Chives already as being 29cm wide X 12cm tall.

Tango Dark Red Zonal Geraniums grew to be 18.5cm wide x 6cm tall this week = 5.5cm wider x 3.2cm taller.

Sophie Cascade Ivy Geranium grew to be 29.2cm x 10.4cm = 3.8cm wider x .8cm taller.

‘Miramar’ Chrysanthemums grew to be 25.5 x 5cm = 2.5cm wider x 0 cm taller.

Snapdragon Mix grew to be 34.2cm x 18cm = -2.2cm wider x 5cm taller.

Cultural Treatments- Our Potted Onion Chives were planted in Sunshine #1 media, fertilized with 200ppm 15-16-17. They received plain water after we planted them.

On my Ivy geranium baskets I searched for dead leaves and buds. There weren’t any yet. I sprayed them with Florel 350ppm today. It is an Ethylene inducer that helps with branching. We sprayed it over the top until it started to drip. That’s how we knew to move on.

With my Mums, like I mentioned in my synopsis we pinched at 7 nodes. If there were leaves to close to the media, we skipped them. I had a ton of dead leaves on my ‘
Miramar’, I was extremely disappointed. My ‘
Roanoke’ plants looked much more vigorous and I didn’t have to remove, but 2 leaves. The ‘
Miramar’ mums I removed at least 3 or 4. Kristen told me it looked like there had been some “shade cloth abuse.”

I ended up removing a couple dead leaves, and a white moth from my geraniums. There was also some buds to be removed from them. There was only one pot that did not have buds to remove from it. I put Florel 350ppm on my Geraniums as well.

Today on my Snapdragons I added a grid to their ring. This will help them with support! We tied a total of 4 pieces of green string across, creating a “tic-tac-toe” type of box. It was important that I be very careful to the delicateness of my Snapdragons. I didn’t want to destroy them at all.
We spaced our benches to match the demo bench today! The only new plants we had that receive clear water are our potted Onion chives. Everything else, but our ferns and Azaleas receive the blue water located in the front of the greenhouse.

Synopsis-
The majority of our lab this week was spent with spacing our potted plants correctly on our bench. We used the meter stick to separate and organize each of the different cultivars. The average spacing was between 6”, 12”, and 24”. The benches looked beautiful when we were finished. Very organized and extremely unified throughout the greenhouse. This week the new things that we did were to choose three types of Azaleas. I chose the Pink Angora Azalea, with the required Prize and Scarlet Azaleas. The Prize measured to be 42 cm wide and 21cm tall. My Scarlet measured to be 31cm wide and 21cm tall. My Pink Angora measured to be 36cm wide and 24.5cm tall. We did a blind shoot removal on our plants, I only had 2 that I was capable of removing on my Azaleas.
We were supposed to measure visible buds on our Easter Lilies this week. However, I did not because I didn’t have any visible buds to remove. I may next week though. We took our EC & pH readings this week again. Matt, Becky & I worked as a team to do our Snapdragons. It was interesting to see how incredibly different all of the Snapdragons readings were coming out.
We soft pinched our Ivy Geraniums this week, this I thought to be a hard task. It was hard to remember if we had pinched on a plant or not, by going around in a circle, and it was hard to follow which branch was the main one. I hope I did mine correctly, I was very careful. I also got to attach my hangers to my Ivy Geraniums!

Pests- I had another increase in fungus gnats this week. My yellow sticky card had 4 more of the little guys. Total of 28! I also found 5 thrips. I didn’t find any insects directly on my plants this week!

Nutrition- My EC & pH requirements to take for this week were on the Snapdragons and the Boston Jr. Ferns. For the Snapdragons, as I mentioned earlier we worked as a team. They were all VERY different for each plant. I averaged four plants, they were an EC of 2.4. They were strangely different ranging from .6 to 4.25. I am guessing that some people are not watering their plants enough, or too much watering is going on, possibly people are using the wrong water they are supposed to use. The pH level was an average 6.5. My Boston Jr. Ferns had an EC reading of 1.7 and a pH reading of 6.3. I don’t believe they need any corrective actions. They seem to be doing alright.

Growth-  My Portfolio plants increased in size this week, all by the snap dragons. They were toppled over by all the rain that poured on them outside.Tango Dark Red Zonal Geranium- 4.2 x 1.7cm

Sophie Cascade Ivy Geranium- 3.8 x 4.8cm

Miramar’ Chrysanthemum— -
1.1 x 2.7cm (decreased in width)

Snapdragon Mix- 7.8 x 5cm (major increase in width) They fell over sideways!! J

Cultural Treatments- This week we gave our Easter Lilies some Gnatrol. A sprinch/heavy spray of it. It is a BT solution. We are having a serious problem with fungus gnats in our greenhouse. The majority of the bugs as you can see I am finding are fungus gnats. They are NOT a good thing to have. Hopefully this will help our Lilies.  I mentioned earlier that we did a bling shoot removal on our Azaleas, we soft pinched the main branches on each of our plants, and we gave our hangers to our pots. We disbudded our geraniums this week as well, but I only had one that I had to take off. We were supposed to work on our visible bud measurements, but I wasn’t able to do that this week. We cleaned up our Azaleas and we spaced our bench so perfectly! I removed all dead leaves from my Chrysanthemums and my Azaleas. There were not any other dead leaves, but what were on these plant cultivars. Our ‘Miramar’ and ‘
Roanoke’ mums were removed from shading and brought into our benches. They will not be receiving any more shade cloth treatment. We used pure water to take our EC and pH readings and we gave all of our plants the usual fertilized water they receive. They are looking great and definitely growing a lot!

This is a picture of my 3 varieties of Potted Ferns.
Synopsis-
On January 30, 2008 in our lab we came in and learned about how to measure the excel of the growth. It was demonstrated in class to “sacrifice” one of the Easter Lilies from the crop and to count the leaves it has unfolded, and then to count the leaves it had yet to unfold. We were then taught how to know how many leaves it is producing at a time. We were also able to count the future buds it has to flower. It was really neat to learn the importance of testing the growth of the Easter Lilies to make sure they are ready at the appropriate time for their market. Our leaves weren’t producing fast enough so it is needed to help them have a warmer climate to grow in, we need to adjust the temperature in the greenhouse a little bit.
Today we also learned how to measure the EC and the pH of our plants. It was really neat to learn this technique and experience it becasue I had studied it before and never gotten to practice it. I was in charge of measuring my Easter Lilies and my ‘Sophie Cascade’ Geraniums.
In the greenhouse we planted Pot Ferns. 2 pots/cultivar. We planted ‘Boston Junior’, ‘Emerald Vase Fern’, ‘Southern Miramar Fern’, and  ’Rosy Maidenhair Fern’. These were planted higher in their media, leaving their crown showing.
We also planted 2 pots of Snapdragons. There were 5 cultivars. Potomac Appleblossoms, Cherry Roses, Early Oranges, Early Pink, and Early Roses. There were 2 plugs of each cultivar per pot. The pots were really large. The media ran out before the second group even got to start planting and it had to be refilled.
Pests- On my yellow sticky card I found 9 bugs. One of them was a green aphid, the other 8 were black little flies. I was informed they were fungus nats.Nutrition- Today it was my responsibility to test the EC & pH levels for the Sophie Ivy Geraniums and the Easter Lilies.
Avg. Easter Lily- EC= 1.3    &    pH= 5.4
Avg. Sophie Ivy Geranium- EC= 3.5   &   pH=6
It was shared that many of the EC levels in the plants were out of control today. I believe that had to do with the fertilizer. We were asked to put clear water if we added any to our plants that are normally given the fertilized water. I had a hard time getting the water to come out of the Easter Lily pots due to the firm, compacted media they have come with. I had to add a lot of water to my Easter Lilies as opposed to the usual 75 ml. that is suggested. Growth- I was a little shocked when I did my measurements to my plants this week.
The width of my ‘Miramar’ plants did not change, however the height had shrunk 2 cm.
‘Roanoke’ decreased in width by 5cm and  grew 2.5cm.
‘Sofie Cascade’ Geranium increased in width by 7cm and grown 5.6cm.
‘Tango Deep Red’ decreased in height 1.3cm and increased in width 6cm.
‘Avendia Mosaic Red’ decreased in height 2cm and increased in width 2cm.
Easter Lilie increased in width 8.2 cm and increased in height 6cm.
I couldn’t figure out why some of my plants had decreased in height and width, but some of them may have changed their stance/growing angles and my media may have caused the change in what I had to measure.

Cultural Treatments-
When potting the fern cultivars it was important, as we potted them to plant them high in the media. The media we used for them was SunShineLC1. With the ferns they need shade, and 20-10-20 fertilizer and they need to alternate with clear water.
Our Snapdragons were important to plant evenly spaced and evenly spread. We planted them in Sunshine #1 media and they need 220ppm 15-16-17 fertilizer. After placing them in their large pots we cut cages, and placed their rings around them for support. Our cultivars were planted with a large circle of 6 lining the outside and a square of 4 in the center of the circle. We were asked to check our Geraniums from lab 1. To disbud them all, remove brown leaves, and add media if it was needed. I had to add media to all of mine. I also cleaned around my pots all of the media that had stuck to the side. I also cleaned and wiped off all of my Easter Lily pots as well.

This was our first week to perform in our floriculture lab. The class consisted of a summary of the lab schedule and choosing our field trip date. We were also notified of the extra credit available in a lecture coming up.
When we went into the greenhouse we were able to learn how to use the watering hose, where the number is to call if the fertilizer is out, and to wait for the water to turn a little blue before use.
After this we potted our plants; ‘Roanoke’, & ‘Miramar’ mums. ‘Tango Deep Red’ and ‘Avendia Mosaic Red’ geraniums. ‘Sophie Cascade’ ivy geraniums. We collected Easter Lilies from upstairs that were already potted.
We labled each of our potted plants with our initials, the dates, and the name of the plants. We also chose 1 plant to measure each time in our lab, we marked the label of the one we will be measuring.

Pests- This week we set up our yellow sticky cards, there were no pests.

Nutrition- We gave our plants water after planting/potting them in their media, ProMix BX.

Growth- We took measurements of the Height and width of our potted plants this week. There will be no growth this week since we are just getting started.

Cultural Treatment- none

Howdy Camp Crew 2008
Jesse Petty Mickle
I am a Senior, Horticulture Major at Texas A&M University!
I am from Mattawa, Washington.
I was just married in December. I am the director of Registration & Recruitment for T-camp 2008.
The only greenhouse experience I have so far was a couple of labs for Hort202, I took Greenhouse Management Fall of 2007, and I worked in the greenhouse of my hometown when I was in Middle school. I want and need more.
My Career aspirations are to be an event and wedding planner/coordinator, and make enough money to have my own, personal greenhouse eventually. I love flowers and vegetable and fruit production. I wouldn’t mind working something internationally with horticulture, or helping to spread the “green word” throughout the world!! I love Horticulture!! Every landscaped path it has!!
