Waterbuck Main Herd Group History

When did the Waterbuck first arrive at Fossil Rim?

Between 1980-1984

Is there a difference in cow behavior when there is a bull with them or when there is not a bull with them?

What is the smallest and the largest the herd has ever been?

Smallest-1.4-1.5 Largest-26-30

In the past was there only one bull with the herd?

Yes, the herd had a sire (red tag #32) until he died around 1997.

Was the bull ever removed and then reintroduced?

No

After the first bull died, was there another bull introduced and where did he come from?

Yes, there was another bull introduced to the herd. The new sire was (blue tag #

530) which had been removed from the herd previously at weaning time.

Has there ever been a bachelor herd of Waterbuck at Fossil Rim?

Yes, but the bachelor herd consisted of all young males under the age of 2 years.

This ended when the Waterbuck became older and more aggressive.

Has there ever been any significant events occur in behavior when introducing bulls?

No, because the only bull ever introduce to the herd was a bull that had previously been with the herd. This process went smoothly but it is predicted that future introductions will depend on the personality of the bull and his history.

    Hi guys

Great blog you’ve got. I am from the tropics (Kenya) and very interested in what happens to animals shipped from here abroad.

    Keep up.
