Education Brainstorm

We just met and did some brainstorming, and Kelly will be uploading some ideas . . .

Lauren’s Project

Lauren Payne observed the waterbuck at Fossil Rim during the summer of 2008, when the vasectomized male, Lucifer, was replaced for two months by the young intact male, Douglas.  This is a directed studies inquiry project for credit at Texas A&M University.  In addition to the observations posted to this blog,  Lauren produced:

Intact male 42Y “Douglas”

He was in quarantine.

He was introduced to the group on 5/7/08

He was removed on: 7/10/08 and returned to quarantine until a companion could be identified to move him to retirement

Intact Male 42Y introduced 5/07/08

The intact male that had been in quarantine was introduced. See fieldnotes for details.

6 Subadults documented as present

Congrats Lauren!

Lauren successfully finished her observations and wrote up her report!  She stopped by today while on campus for the Beef Short Course, and dropped off the gear bag and datasheets.  Amanda registered her for a “Directed Studies” during fall semester, so she will get credit hours for her research project this summer.

I’m sure Renee will also be interested in reading her report.  We will be meeting the third week of August to talk about next steps for the waterbuck project.  So we will be thinking about how to work up the comparison between Lucifer and Douglas, including considering whether there might be enough data to submit a write-up to a newsletter or journal.

Lauren, thanks for filling in at such an important time and doing a great job!

Jane

New calf…tagged by Adam

From Lauren’s notes, it appears there is another new calf, which had a yellow tagged dam, and was tagged by Adam….lets do more detective work on this!….

Field Notes from August 1, 2008

I located a herd of 14 females, Crooked Tail, and another larger sized calf in the front pasture. I found Lucifer and Toby with 2 other females by the Lodge. Lucifer sniffed a female but soon lost interest. They were all grazing. There was a mother and calf nursing that I got on video. Also, there was a single waterbuck female on the Juniper Loop. That initial herd of females had moved behind the vet clinic, into the shed. There was very little activity with them.
