DHS Releases Application Guidance for $3 Billion in Grants

On February 1st, the Department of Homeland Security released application guidance for 2008 grants.  Funds will administered through 14 Federal grant programs that all seek to strengthen the nation’s “ability to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from terrorist attacks, major disasters, and other emergencies.”  Applications that deal with preparing for and countering IED threats are being especially encouraged, with 25% of funding allotted for this type of application.

The deadline for IPP applications is March 17, 2008 and HSGP applications must be submitted by May 1, 2008.

For more information, including a comprehensive list of grant programs, as well as funds allotted for each program, visit http://www.dhs.gov/xnews/releases/pr_1201882070387.shtm.

    Hello,
I am a Criminal Justice student and I am interested in Homeland Security education and training. Investigations and surveillance are my top choices of specialized skills I’d like to get involved with.
I would also like to go to New Orleans and help. I saw on the news one day Secretary Chertoff saying they need ”eyes and eyes ” to disrupt and deter criminal activity.
I am a very good canidate for that, I assure. I could even send police reference of my success, drive and consistency in disrupting and deterrence in criminal activity, in what I called resortland security. I was was called ”hotel detective”.
How should I start to get involved and volunteer.
    Thanx for your time,
    Nicole Bragassa

    Nicole,

Thank you for your interest in Homeland Security Education.

If you would like to volunteer there is a whole host of homeland security related organizations and programs that not only help you gain practical experience in homeland security but also allow you to serve your community. The first place I would recommend looking for volunteering opportunities would be http://www.citizencorps.gov/. This website will provide you with basic information about who to specifically contact about volunteering opportunities, where volunteers are needed, and what types of services volunteers can provide.

Given your specific interest in criminal justice, I would recommend that you look into the “Volunteers in Police Service” (VIPS) program (http://www.policevolunteers.org/). Unfortunately, there is not a VIPS program in Bryan/College Station. However, there are numerous VIPS programs in the state of Texas which could provide you with the opportunity to volunteer. For a full list of VIPS program locations you may visit http://www.policevolunteers.org/programs/.

Depending on where you are in your education, it may also be appropriate for you to apply for the Graduate Certificate Program in Homeland Security through the Bush School here at A&M. For more information go to http://bush.tamu.edu/extendeded/chls/. There you can find information about applying, courses, financial aid, etc. You may also visit the Integrative Center for Homeland Security’s (homelandsecurity.tamu.edu) website for information about other homeland security education opportunities at A&M.

Again, thank you for your interest in homeland security education.

Thanx so much Aaron! Great tips, from both angles. I wioll follow up on them. I’m kinda shocked this website info is given to the world on internet. I looked up my name on google and it says I’m in law enforcement from email posts awhile back. Oh well even my suspects know I study Investigations/Criminal Justice. I’m just a student, no harm, yet that is.
